Middle School Advocacy

NAYA Family Center staff provides advocacy and support to Native youth enrolled in both middle and high schools throughout Multnomah County school districts. Advocates  work closely with youth to assist them in completing their academic programs and/or to return to school by accessing available resources and helping youth to navigate the educational system. NAYA Family Center collaborates with a vast network of educational and social services, and referrals are made to connect youth and their families with cultural and community resources as appropriate.

Middle School Services include:
  • Tutoring and Homework Assistance are provided after school, Monday through Friday during the academic year. Professional staff and volunteers provide assistance to students in all subject areas with special focus on reading, math and science. NAYA Family Center’s Tutoring Center is equipped with a Media Center including computer workstations with Internet access, as well as many educational learning discs.
  • Book Club meets the first Wednesday of each month from 5-6 pm.  The group discusses books that they are reading, and each student is working toward “money” on a Powell’s bookstore gift card.
  • School-Break Day Camps:  During each break from school during the year we will host a day camp for students age 9-13.  During Spring and Winter break, this camp lasts for 3 days.  The summer program lasts for 5 weeks.  For details about these programs, please contact Micah Johnson (ext. 212) in the Tutoring Center.
  • Education Advocates are available to help students and families make sure that students are getting what they need in school.  Advocates also help families to assess their needs and areas of strength to meet those needs, identify community resources, and create a plan for success.
  • Native American Clubs:  NAYA Family Center   will be offering clubs in many of the Portland middle schools.  These groups will meet to work on specific projects, focusing on cultural identity and tradition.  If you are interested in having one of these sessions at a school, please contact Sarah Gellman (ext. 213).
  • Special Field Trip opportunities as they arise.
Please look through the rest of the NAYA Family Center website for information about our Culture Programming, Sports and Outdoor Club Programming.
