Tax Assistance

Free Tax Filing at the Tax Site

Have your taxes prepared and filed electronically by IRS Certified VITA/TCE Volunteer Preparers all year round! Receive your refund in as little as 10 days if you choose direct deposit, or 3 weeks if you prefer a check. If you are supporting children and your family income is less than $45,000, you may qualify for thousands of dollars in tax credits to help you support your family. Don’t let commercial tax preparers take your family’s money! Many paid preparers target low-income families with high-interest predatory “loans” so that you can get your refund a week or so earlier. NAYA’s free tax filing lets you use your entire refund as it was intended—to support your family and to help you be stable or build savings. Pay bills, buy groceries, invest in cultural activities like traveling to Gatherings or family, or save the money—for emergencies, for helping family members, or for a big purchase like a home!

Learn Tax Law and Help Your Community as a Volunteer Tax Preparer

“[My favorite part of being a tax prep volunteer was] being able to make someone's day by preparing their return for FREE and usually being able to give them the good news that they'd be getting money back. Each experience was a rewarding one.” – NAYA Family Center Volunteer Tax Preparer

“[I loved] working with a cooperative team of volunteers and having amazing support from the volunteer coordinator. Most other volunteers were friendly and easy to work with, and we all helped each other. Also, providing a service for the public, even if it meant delivering bad news at times (e.g., when a person's return was completed and you need to tell them they owe taxes.)” – NAYA Family Center Volunteer Tax Preparer

Fight poverty, help families and individuals claim the tax credits that they qualify for, and learn a valuable skill as a Volunteer Tax Preparer at the NAYA Family Center! Last tax season, we filed more than 400 tax returns, returning $600,000 in refunds (including over $185,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits) to local families. We want to return even more to the community this year, and we need your help! This year we are also working with IRCO and El Programa Hispano, so please share this request with anyone you think may be interested, particularly those with language skills relevant to those communities.

This volunteer opportunity is unique—please expect to spend around 40 hours to become certified as a volunteer preparer before you can prepare tax returns.
