Position Description

Summary of Position: The VISTA Volunteer Program Specialist will work with the development and finance staff and other VISTA members to assist the Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA Family Center) in building organizational capacity.  The VISTA Volunteer Program Specialist will assist in the development of strategies to refine and enhance NAYA Family Center’s programmatic capacity and capabilities for managing volunteers and other resources. Systems refinement will increase NAYA Family Center’s efficiency and effectiveness and allow NAYA to reach its agency goal of improving Native American family stability and promoting Native American self-sufficiency in the Portland Metro Area.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The VISTA Volunteer Program Specialist will work directly with the Sustainability Officer to:
A:  Finalize the NAYA Volunteer Program Manual and implement field tests among a representative portion of staff and volunteers.
B:  Perform a critical analysis and audit of existing volunteer management materials and systems.
C:  Revise agency database system to simplify tracking volunteer data.
D:  Refine existing data and systems to better fit programmatic and agency wide goals and mission.
E:  Develop a NAYA Volunteer Recruitment and Outreach Plan.
F:  Provide orientation and outreach for the NAYA Volunteer Recruitment and Outreach Plan.
G:  Participate in ongoing agency assessment and planning for agency use of volunteers, including identification of revenue strategies to support a permanent Volunteer Program Specialist.
H:  Represent NAYA at area volunteer networking meetings and build agency volunteer partnerships.

Preferred Qualifications: This position requires solid research and writing experience and data management skills. Pertinent background may include general fundraising experience and/or an educational background in language arts, technical writing, social services or business, administration. Additional qualifications sought include:

•    Excellent communication, writing and organizational skills.
•    Detail oriented, preferably with strong analytical skills.
•    Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite and proficient at data entry and systems applications.
•    Knowledge and experience in nonprofit agencies is preferred.
•    Knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, Native culture and issues.
•    Spirit of cooperation and ability to work as part of a team.
