AmeriCorps*VISTA Civic Engagement Specialist
Position Description
Summary of Position: The VISTA Civic Engagement Specialist will work with other VISTA members to assist the Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA Family Center) in building organizational capacity. The VISTA Civic Engagement Specialist will assist in the development of strategies to identify and recruit community participation in civic activities. The position will also assist in the development of a support system to the Youth and Elders Council. Systems refinement will increase NAYA Family Center’s efficiency and effectiveness and allow the agency to reach its goal of improving Native American family stability and promoting Native American self-sufficiency in the Portland Metro Area. Duties and Responsibilities: The VISTA Civic Engagement Specialist will work directly with both the Community Development Manager and the Youth and Elders Coordinator in the identification, assessment, refinement, and implementation of a system to increase the capacity of the agency in utilizing community members in a manner that is consistent and strategic to the mission. This person will participate in the following activities: A. Assist in the development and communication of agency policies and procedures regarding the identification of community members willing to actively participate in civic engagement. B. Aid in the development of an electronic system to record, monitor, and report activities as well as outcomes relative to civic engagement and community participation. C: Assist in the assessment and development of effective planning efforts including agendas, resource management, communications, and training for community members. D: Assist in the implementation of an effective Civic Engagement process including training community members, staff, and Board members. Preferred Qualifications: This position requires solid research and writing experience, data management skills, and policy experience. Pertinent background may include experience and/or an educational background in communication, marketing, language arts, technical writing, social services or business, administration. Additional qualifications sought include: • Excellent communication, writing and organizational skills. • Detail oriented, preferably with strong analytical skills. • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite and proficient at data entry and systems applications. • Knowledge and experience in nonprofit agencies is preferred. • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, Native culture and issues. • Spirit of cooperation and ability to work as part of a team. |
